Relatively hyperbolic Groups

چکیده
In this paper we develop some of the foundations of the theory of relatively hyperbolic groups as originally formulated by Gromov. We prove the equivalence of two definitions of this notion. One is essentially that of a group admitting a properly discontinuous geometrically finite action on a proper hyperbolic space, that is, such that every limit point is either a conical limit point or a bounded parabolic point. The other is that of a group which admits a cofinite action on a connected fine hyperbolic graph. We define a graph to be “fine” if there are only finitely many circuits a given length containing any given edge, and we develop some of the properties of this notion. We show how a relatively hyperbolic group can be assumed to act on a proper hyperbolic space of a particular geometric form. We define the boundary of a relatively hyperbolic group, and show that the limit set of any geometrically finite action of the group is equivariantly homeomorphic to this boundary. This generalises a result of Tukia for geometrically finite kleinian groups. We also describe when the boundary

We study the geometry of non-relatively hyperbolic groups. Generalizing a result of Schwartz, any quasi-isometric image of a non-relatively hyperbolic space in a relatively hyperbolic space is contained in a bounded neighborhood of a single peripheral subgroup. This implies that a group being relatively hyperbolic with non-relatively hyperbolic peripheral subgroups is a quasi-isometry invariant...
متن کاملFillings, Finite Generation and Direct Limits of Relatively Hyperbolic Groups
We examine the relationship between finitely and infinitely generated relatively hyperbolic groups. We observe that direct limits of relatively hyperbolic groups are in fact direct limits of finitely generated relatively hyperbolic groups. We use this (and known results) to prove the Strong Novikov Conjecture for the groups constructed by Osin in [17].

متن کاملThe Conjugacy Problem for Relatively Hyperbolic Groups
Solvability of the conjugacy problem for relatively hyperbolic groups was announced by Gromov [12]. Using the definition of Farb of a relatively hyperbolic group [9], we prove this assertion. We conclude that the conjugacy problem is solvable for the following two classes of groups: fundamental groups of complete, finite-volume, negatively curved manifolds, and finitely generated fully residual...
متن کاملDehn Filling in Relatively Hyperbolic Groups
We introduce a number of new tools for the study of relatively hyperbolic groups. First, given a relatively hyperbolic group G, we construct a nice combinatorial Gromov hyperbolic model space acted on properly by G, which reflects the relative hyperbolicity of G in many natural ways. Second, we construct two useful bicombings on this space. The first of these, preferred paths, is combinatorial ...
متن کاملFinding relative hyperbolic structures
This arXived paper has two independant parts, that are improved and corrected versions of different parts of a single paper, once named “On equations in relatively hyperbolic groups”. The first part is entitled “Existential questions in (relatively) hyperbolic groups” (to appear in Israel J. Math.). We study there the existential theory of torsion free hyperbolic and relatively hyperbolic group...
